I can sew

My sewing skills consist of sewing a button onto a shirt and thats it, even my mending skills suck, I didnt even know how to turn on sewing machine....... until last night when my 13 year showed me how.
I have always wanted to make a bunting so I had some lovely bright vintage material I had scored at the opp shop which was an old pair of drapes that I cut up.
Learning to sew was a bit like learning to drive, I sewed the first side and India was telling me to slow down and master 10 in the background piped up and said seriously Mum you really need to take some lessons in sewing grrrrrrrr.
Then I had 4 bits of cotton coming out of machine instead of two I yell out " Indy can you please fix this"
her comment " I think I will just have to sit with you for a bit longer"  Master 10 giggling in the background.
Then I ran out of cotton from the inside of machine {what ever that is called} call India in again to thread some more.
That child was so patient with me. I havnt put the bunting together yet think I will just get the hang of sewing straight, my sewing is pretty rough but I know how to turn the maching on and start sewing { if the thread is all there for me]. So Im a sewer under supervision yay.

  1. Well done you, given how hard you work both at work and in your home and yard, it is amazing that you have the time to learn a new skill. Be careful it is addictive.

    1. Hi Pam, I had been wanting to have a go for a long time and that machine was calling my name lol. Funny you say that I have cut out heaps of triangles out of those drapes and thinking about cutting more just to sew them I may have a house full of buntings or everyone will get one for christmas.

  2. On the one i made not long ago, we also cut triangles of hessian and placed them every 4th triangle. The colours were more muted (very country) and so the hessian worked well. We hand painted, again with very light (not bright) colours, hearts. We were decorating for a hens event at the races. We also made some out triangles out of old curtain lace. These looked really nice. Slow and steady - you will learn. Im impressed by your daughter. Must be a feather in her cap (dont say that, she'll wonder what a hat and feather have to do with teaching sewing).

Get the 10 year old back by asking him to cook dinner and the mess.

I do expect photos when finished.

    1. Wow Lynda they sound quite creative, yes India is the patient one in this house, she got the machine for her birthday last year and taught herself to sew. I told Tyler it was his turn next to sew so then he decided to keep his comments to himself. Oh yes there will be photos lol.

  5. Dear Sharon
I started with Christmas bunting and have now also made Spring and Summer as well. Autumn will be next (and it is approaching autumn here, so I need to get making) and winter, of course. It is addictive!
Good luck with getting to grips with the sewing machine - once you have, there'll be no stopping you!
    Best wishes
