Nightshift

Nightshift has been part of my life for the last 20 years, every three weeks it rears its ugly head, lucky the last 10 years I have been doing job share, so its not a full week of nights but I dont know if any body on here has worked nights but its my week where I feel like the creature from the deep I just dont know how to explain the feeling of tiredness it is nothing like sleepless nights with children and believe me I had a child that never slept.
I worked nights last night and by 4 am my body was so physically tired and my head just couldnt think my job can be physical so constantly on feet for 9 hours in steel cap boots bending and dragging things, probably better that I am moving around as the minute its time for my break I fall in a hole I just could lay down on the floor and go to sleep anywhere.
As I work shift work and my home life is always busy I am a firm believer in vitamins and stretching.
I take a womens multi vitamin and vitamin C everyday. I also love my juicer as I make a juice with celery , carrots and beetroot ginger, apple and orange, my daughter informs me it smells like the compost bin but she loves it.

Im not a big coffee drinker and I dont drink energy drinks and rarely drink soft drink.
I notice at work a lot of people drink the evergy drinks on nightshift, but I really dont think they are good for you so I steer clear of them.
I always have a lot of plans for what Im going to do when I get home from nightshift but the minute Im home thats out the door, I will mop tonight and I have to put kids beds back together as I stripped them yesterday and did all the sheets but I think that will be it, basically Im out of action and one thing I really should not do after working nightshift is grocery shop.
Im lucky this week I only do 2 nights so thats nothing really, I often think oh I might go back to work full time next year but the week I do nights I change that attitude quick smart. I really wonder if there is somebody out there who actually likes nightshift.

  2. For most of our 20 year marriage, Hubby has done monthly rotating shiftwork (day, afternoon, night, split). It really shaped our marriage as we didnt see alot of each other and we were like ships passing in the night. His weekends were during the week while i worked and Tom at school and even his holidays were outside of school holidays. Crazy Life. We have less money now but i am glad for Mon-Fri. It takes a while to adjust and we still have to plan to do things together as it is natural for us to do it alone. I wonder how it impacts your family as well.

  3. My partner works on same shift as I do we dont live together but are understanding of each others tiredness on nightshift.
    My children go to their Dads house on the couple of days I work each week since we seperated when they were babies they have known no different its just routine for us. School holidays we always try and do things together Im lucky its only part time if it were full time I dont think I would be there. There are a few Mums there that job share so they can spend time with their children which has been good. You would certainly understand shift work then. My shifts are split like that to.

  4. Oh dear, I feel for you but I can not help you at all. I have worked night shift for years and I love it. My job involves steely leather boots, pushing and pulling heavy weights and I lift 25Kg bags several times a night. A few weeks ago I cut back to 3 shifts a week but we are so busy and have lots of folks on holidays that I will be working 5 and sometimes 6 shifts a week, just for a short while. Just to make it worse I cut back because at 62 I wanted to do other things with my time but was not ready to retire completely. On the plus side I do not have young children but my 2 little dogs have their needs and I cook every thing from scratch.

  5. Wow Pam you sound like superwoman, I also do the 25kg bags but on nights they seem so much heavier, lol I can not believe you love night shift. You must be superfit. I think I need to be fitter about a month ago I fell down my stairs at home and think thats why my back still aches. But after 20 years I still do not like night shift. You have me in shock lol x

    1. What job are you in? I am a cook in a Deli factory, we produce a wide range of prepacked salads and cooked vegetables for a leading upmarket supermarket chain. We also make the pillow pack and bowl leaf salads in another department. We are crazy busy you would never think that there is a recession. God bless the woman who is too busy or too lazy to wash her own lettuce or make a potato salad.lol
      In the past 3 years I broke both wrists, falling on packed snow and ice, I was told that it would prevent me from lifting but has not affected me at all. Perhaps I am super fit, maybe it is because I have a strong skeletal structure.

  6. Hi Pam, I work in a chocolate factory. Oh I have seen the pre packed salads and things here, the funny one is cut up apples I just dont see how people are to busy to cut up and apple. There is so much more prepacked things now like veges all cut up ready to throw in and roast. You do sound like you are super fit.

  7. Hi there, I have done a lot of research lately into melatonin, which the body releases and controls the sleep/wake cycle. Night shifts are particularly difficult for the body, which you already know! There is really no easy answer to solve this. My son finds sleeping difficult. Melatonin is released when it becomes dark, so we feel sleepy. When it's light melatonin slows down. This is the cycle. night work and having dark rooms during the day confuses the body. Also using brightly screens like computers, phones and laptops before sleeping, also effects the levels. Plus having the correct amount of melatonin contributes to wellbeing and how we feel! so it's pretty important. Tricky stuff. I'm very inspired by your juice, I haven't done that for a while.   8. Wow thank you for the info,Im going to look into that. It would be very interesting if we could get these levels checked.
    I love my juicer at the moment especially now that its winter here and I like to have plenty of ginger on hand to keep colds away. x
