Cottage Garden

 The other day while browsing the opp shop I picked up this book reduced to 20 cents.
After having a read of it I have decided that I am now obsessed with the cottage style garden. I will probably visit the local library and pick up some more books on the subject.

 I think my garden will be based on a cottage garden as I love everything about it.
Informal design, traditional materials, dense plantings, a mixture of ornamental and edible plants.
English in origin.
Depends on grace and charm rather than grandeur and formal structure

 Homely and functional

 The earliest cottage gardens were more practical than modern descendants with emphasis on vegetables and herbs along with fruit trees {yep got those}

 Perhaps a beehive { hopefully my next adventure definitely going to do bee keeping workshop}
 Even livestock ...... well I have chooks
 and a couple of pigs { but they will be going to new homes soon}
 At moment there is even chickens inside much to the cats disgust although very entertaining for them.
Flowers were used to fill all spaces { Im working on it}
I am definitely in love with cottage style gardens.
What style gardens do you love?

  1. It's cottage style gardens for me all the way. I live in the Dandenongs and have a ton of shade so making it cottage style can be challenging. I love the rambling slightly wild way cottage gardens come together. Suits my personality. :) Looking forward to seeing what you do.

    1. Hi Anne, yes I think they suit my personality also. The Dandenongs are beautiful I think there is a famous cottage garden down there "Edna Walling" I think she wrote a couple of books on Cottage Gardening and her home is down that way. xx

  2. Cottage style is definitely my favourite too and our English countryside and weather lends itself to this type of planting.

  3. Im looking at that bench thinking of all the delicious colors we have out in the powdercoating shop. There is signal red and lavender, cobalt blue........

    I dream of living in a little two bedroom miners cottage with a cottage garden at the front and a veggie patch out the back. I think i should be living in Castlemaine, Clunes or Maldon.

    2. If i remember, tomorrow when the Prod Man is in my office ill show him and see if its possible. It may need to be dipped first (in acid) to get the old stuff off, but maybe not. I'll let you know. Now that i know it was your grandmothers then it will definately have to be done. What colour are you thinking? Creams, pale eucalypt green, black, blue, red, orange, we have quite a few.
