If these walls could talk. Tour of Aradale

I have often driven though Ararat and seen the large white building on the hill, even as a child I can remember it.
Today we decided to take the tour of the Old Aradale mental hospital and what incredible sadness I felt.
These are a few snippets from ex patients. This one just speaks for itself

If you click on the photo above you may be able to read this one
Ararat Mental Hospital opened 1867-- decommissioned 1993
Aradale was built as a town within a town. It had its own market gardens, orchard, vineyard, piggery and other livestock.
While NMIT has a vineyard, olive grove and lavender farm at Aradale, the extensive asylum buildings are in disrepair. The Friends of J Ward hope the 90-minute tours will draw wider attention to Aradale and spark efforts to preserve its 146-year-long history.
I took to many photos to post , there is so much history and sadness here.
The photo above is administration everyone would of come through this room
Staff quarters, training nurses would stay on the property. I really dont think I would like to be a nurse in those days.
This is a single room. Its quite dark but patients would be locked in at night.
The saddest thing about those times is young or old ,male of female who had a mental illness such as autism, down syndrome, epilepsy, post natal depression may of found themselves here.
The chapel, the guide told us a story about a man who every week asked the priest to pray for his mother, after several months the priest asked the man is your Mother ok, the mans reply was " I dont know Ive never met her I just wanted to make sure she was ok" The man had been in an institution all his life {he had down syndrome} I almost cried.

 Shared showers
This desolute building once housed over 1000 patients with the only home they knew and generally stayed there for life.
The men and women were housed seperately
This building was the most disturbing they didnt take us through as it had been vandalized . But the guide did say it housed the most disturbed patients, at most times they didnt wear clothes, they would toilet where they stood and were hosed instead of showered. He did say all the hoses were still there. To me I just cant imagine how horrific that would of been, and even to work there. They were heavily medicated as well.
An exercise yard, on each building was supposed to be so they could get out and play ball and mingle but with heavy medications this was difficult
Cellars to store food that was grown on the property
This is a room where the female would do activities such as peg making and basket weaving
A bakery where they made their own bread
The diet chart for soft ,special or full meal.
This is where the gardens once were
The front of the building where the patients were driven up to it looked quite ok
It is well worth a visit . Very interesting and very sad.

After the rain

I hope everyone had a wonderful new year. I had a very quiet one, at the moment here it is extremely hot and windy I spent the day keeping everyone cool and making sure the fur babies had frozen water bottles to lay on and fresh fruit to eat. When the rain arrived tonight it was very much appreciated.
Im having a big declutter no draw or cupboard or shed will be left unturned. I have hired a skip it arrives Monday at the present moment my passage is full of bits and pieces and Im listing things on Buy swap and sell sites. A new year requires new measures.
I had a few more strawberries than last year, but still not a great deal.
Ive been busy writing my reiki manuals Ive finally got the level one written ready to send of to the Reiki association. Im still loving my reiki garden, I still have a couple of things I want to put here but one step at a time, things always get done gradually here.
Im grateful that I have had some beautiful gladi blooms this year , a client who comes for a reiki bought the bulbs for me out of her garden and they are all just starting to bloom
 Plums are abundant
 So are apples
 Amonds
 Figs
and woo hoo my first pears yum yum
Dam it my apricots are diseased, any suggestions anyone?
Im all class when it comes to garden ornaments
My Prayer flags certainly were blowing in the wind
 My little present to myself
I am so grateful to my relatives who helped me get my front garden under control
The rain has bought out the duck food

 Someone else likes my spot
I am grateful for the rain today
My helpers this week my Mums brother and his wife and boy did we put in some hard yakka
We also went to the grampians zoo once again and had a awesome time

Merry Christmas Friends

I have not blogged for a little while as things have been quite busy around here and they still are but Im just going to squeeze in a little Merry Christmas and hope everyone has a safe and very Happy Christmas.
Lots of things happening at my house in the last few months.
I once again have a freezer full of berries as its about the only thing going in the garden at the moment.
Amongst this silly season I have decided to change my children to another school. It was a big decision and Im more than happy with my choice now.
I was sending them to a local private school as I thought if I paid the money they would get a good education. Well that was far from the truth , I even contacted specialists in my local town and after speaking to many people I changed Tyler first for the last term of this year and he has come along in leaps and bounds.
India will start next year the decision to change her was only made in last 2 weeks . So all this changing schools is a busy time in itself with new books and uniforms and selling of old books and uniforms. You know the drill.
I have a little color in the garden
and a little fruit....... well a lot of fruit actually
I know I keep posting this rose but I do so love it

Ta da the vege garden. Yes I know but I did let it go on purpose I wanted all the kale seeds
I do have a couple of tomatoes. I think everything has been on back burner while I was sorting out these children.
 Lucky berries love me
 Almonds
 and cherries
 and love in a mist
My little peace garden Im hoping to get some peace there soon to write up my reiki manuals so I can begin to take classes in 2015.
 My grapes have gone wild
and so has Alaska she thinks if you dont do the garden I will. She picks her own veges although now its all fenced of much to her disgust, she has resorted to collecting her own duck eggs now. I love Gizzis face at the door as if to say "I didnt do it MUM"
I love the view from my kitchen window. I have been in their a bit lately preparing for Christmas although Im a little behind as I have had many visitors this past week and tonight Im having a christmas eve get together so Im going to have to get cracking and start cooking and cleaning. Im having Christmas lunch here with family and family and friends coming for christmas eve as well.
Although I have 11 bunnies to be picked up today so Im of to get them ready first.

During the year I have been busy with my reiki and one client I gave a couple of sessions to but didnt charge but to keep the balance I just said if you bring something that you bake or from the garden. She bought me bulbs that she had dug and these gladis are them , simple beautiful.

This one I already had and the red. They were my Mothers favorite flower she had every color.
Thats my next goal

Last but not least my beautiful dahlia from Tracey , Thank you Tracey these are my favorite flowers. I have a few more bushes growing but they havnt bloomed yet this is the first so a tad excited as Tracey is a fellow blogger and we did a little swap.
Thats all from me until after Christmas so Im wishing you all a very Happy Christmas try and slow down and enjoy the season
