Thursdays happenings

My daughters interest in gardening goes as far as finding flies and feeding this
Um not sure about these carrots, I dont have a lot of luck with carrots.
 Beetroots are always lovely
Have just started harvesting garlic and they are super this year
Quite large bulbs. These were grown from cloves I saved from last years crop so cost nothing at all. I love this seed saving thing I have so much to learn about saving other seeds. But my garlic, broad beans and tomatoes have always done well this way.
Still some more garlic to pick.
I really love my slow cooker it is so handy. I prepared the dish the night before and put it in the fridge { beef and red wine casserole} Popped in on at 7am on auto and ta da all ready at tea time .

Cooking the beetroot , this will be wonderful in salads. There is nothing like home made beetroot . I had tin beetroot a couple of weeks ago and it just does not compare
Kat and Nala enjoying some fresh eggs.

  1. Carrots need a really fine tilth as they are lazy and grow round obstacles rather than push them out of the way. If you mix compost and sharp sand, in equal and generous amounts, into one of your raised beds it should give you a perfect growing medium. Just fork the soil thoroughly, think sifting flour for a sponge, and just rake it level before sowing.

  3. Hi Sharon. Lovely garlic, and quite large as you mentioned. Well done.

Do you experience black aphids on your garlic or onions? I know that last year mine were heavily infested, but this year nature kicked in and decided to grow oregano in between each garlic bulb. They were massive, and the herb kept the bugs away.

I will certainly try that intentionally next year. Companion planting really works.

Oh, and your beetroot looks fantastic as well.

    Gav.

    1. Hi Gav, I didnt companion plant with garlic this year, I havnt experienced black aphids as yet { touch wood } But just in case next year I will plant oregano in same bed, I do have oregano growing but no where near the garlic. Um you forgot to mention my beautiful carrots lol. I told you they were hideous ..... but they did taste nice in the slow cooker.

  4. I too suffer from strangled carrots. Ive tried twice and did what i thought was a good prep but no, twisted orange aliens is all i got. Oh well. I will try again. I also love slow cooked meals, its the only way i can eat meat. It almost has to fall off the bone before i can get it down. Not a fan of beetroot but i grow it for hubby and i pick the small leaves for my salad. Cheers.
